ECKSTEIN'S PLAN TO CAINE ALL CHALLENGERS IN nib COOLANGATTA GOLD (Surf Sports)

caine eckstein 1 photo harvie allison.jpgCOOLANGATTA, October 15: Tugun Ironman Caine Eckstein has issued a challenge to his rivals just a week out from Sunday's nib Coolangatta Gold with the 22-year-old declaring he is "twice as strong" compared to when he last raced and won the coveted crown back in 2005.

Eckstein, who will attend today's "Carbo loading lunch" at Currumbin Vikings SLSC, left Surf Life Saving soon after the win three years ago to pursue triathlon and more recently endurance ski paddling events.

He now returns for the 46 kilometre return journey from Surfers Paradise to Coolangatta, looking to become only the second man in history after Guy Leech in 1984 and 85 to win the event twice.

DOUG FROST LANDS TOP COACHING JOB IN SCOTLAND (Swimming) doug frost 1 photo doug frost swim school.jpgLOUGHBOROUGH, England, October 15: Doug Frost, the man who steered Ian Thorpe to the top of world swimming, has been named as the Head Coach of the new British Swimming Intensive Training Centre (ITC) in Stirling, Scotland, British Swimming announced today.

Frost is regarded as one of the top coaches in world swimming after being given the World Swimming Coaches Association TERAO Award. In his career he has coached countless elite Australian swimmers including Olympic medallists Thorpe and Kirsten Thomson. Frost coached Thorpe from 1997 to his triple gold medal performance at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

KURT FEARNLEY DEFENDS CHICAGO MARATHON TITLE (NSWIS) kurt fearnley in beijing 1 photo serena corporate photography.jpgChicago, USA, October 13: NSWIS scholarship holder and 2008 Paralympic gold medallist Kurt Fearnley has successfully defended his the Chicago Wheelchair Marathon  - easily defeating Beijing silver medallist, Japan's Masazumi Soejima.

Fearnley won in 1 hour 30 minutes and 16 seconds, but this time the second-place finisher Soejima, was no threat with a time of 1:32:30 - unlike the split second victory in Beijing.

GUEHRER AND SPRENGER TOP POINTSCORERS IN OPENING FINA/ARENA WORLD CUP (Swimming)

The pair won the prestigious High Pointscorers Awards with stunning performances on day two of the meet.

Guehrer added to her day one gold in the 100 metres butterfly with eye-catching wins in both the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle - her butterfly time the seventh fastest all-time and just 0.27 outside the world record set earlier this year by fellow Australian Felicity Galvez.

FEARNLEY CHASING THREE-PEAT IN CHICAGO MARATHON (NSWIS) kurt fearnley in beijing 1 photo serena corporate photography.jpgSYDNEY, October 10: Australian Paralympic champion and NSWIS scholarship holder, Kurt Fearnley will attempt to defend his Chicago marathon title on Sunday - and chalk up his third straight win in the prestigious event.

The race will be Fearnley's first since winning gold in the Beijing Paralympic marathon last month.

The three-day meet will feature a small but select group of Australians that also includes rising stars Kyle Richardson (Qld) and Jackie Staples (South Australia), under veteran coach Bernie Mulroy.

In the third race in 1992 Coolangatta Gold it was the battle of Thirroul's favourite sons Darren Mercer who held the Gold trophy aloft with little brother Dean finishing third.

IAN THORPE AND JOHN CAREW INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME (Swimming)

ian thorpe 400m freestyle athens 1 photo delly carr.jpgMELBOURNE, October 9: Australia's most successful Olympian Ian Thorpe and master swim coach John Carew were last night inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in Melbourne.

Thorpe, the winner of more gold medals than any other Olympian - five - in Sydney and Athens - is one of the youngest to achieve the status - but he has a record second to none.

Apart from his five Olympic gold medals Thorpe, who turns 26 on Monday, has 13 world titles and 22 world records to his name.

He set the swimming world alight from his first World Championship in 1998 to his final gold medal in 2004.
